WaspsTry not to worry about single wasps, larger numbers that persist could mean that there is a nest nearby or in your property. Nest sizes reach their peak in late summer, August and September. Adult worker wasps have the characteristic black and yellow patterning on the abdomen and are between 15-20 mm long. They have a black head and thorax The fore and hind wings are held together by a row of minute hooks giving the appearance of only one wing per side of the wasp. The wings are heavily veined The wasps are colonial insects living in social groups. Each colony is established in the spring by an over wintering queen who makes a small starter nest from paper made by itself by mixed wood and saliva. The colony grows throughout the summer and the nest with it Many thousand individuals are often to be found associated with each nest with the workers feeding on a nectar, sweet materials and at certain times insect larvae and other animal pieces. The colony develops males towards the end of the summer to mate with presumptive queens which when mated over winter to start a new colony' the following year. go to top of the page |

Pharaoh's AntsControl
The use of conventional insecticides against Pharaoh's ants is not recommended as this will almost certainly cause worker ants to form satellite colonies and thus actively spread an infestation deeper into a building.
Granular or gel baits are available for Pharaoh's ant control. These should be laid where the ants are actively foraging and particularly with this ant species, treatment of adjacent properties may be advisable. go to top of the page |

Red AntsControl
Accessibility to the nests may be restricted and yet this is the key to gaining control of the infestation. Following trails of worker ants back to the nest should help to locate their position. Residual insecticide treatments should be applied in or around the nest.
Barriers of insecticide may also be utilised around strategic points on a property to prevent foraging workers gaining access. Good hygiene so as to reduce attraction for ants is also important. As nests are often within vegetation, an approved horticultural or agricultural insecticide may need to be used. go to top of the page |

Cluster FlyControl
Voids should be investigated which may be harboring the flies.
These may then be treated with a dust / mist application of insecticide.
ULV treatment should prove particularly effective at knocking down adult flies. In some situations, dichlorvos strips may also be used. ULV treatments are best carried out in late autumn or early winter when the majority of flies will have entered the property to over winter. A repeat treatment may be necessary in early spring, as temperatures rise and the flies begin to emerge from their over wintering sites and infest living quarters. insecticide baits are ineffective at controlling cluster flies due to the fact that adult flies do not actively feed when they over winter within properties. If flies are observed congregating on particular walls or surfaces, then these should be treated using a residual insecticide. go to top of the page |

Owl MidgesControl
The application of a residual synthetic pyrethroid would be effective in controlling the adult flies, as would the application of ULV insecticide.
Treatment consists of finding the source of the infestation and removing it if possible.
However, if the source of the infestation is not identified and dealt with, the problem is likely to recur. go to top of the page |

Cat FleaControl
Control Treatment consists of identifying the source of the infestation, ie: the host animal(s), and if appropriate treating it with a suitable veterinary product. Such a treatment should not be carried out by a pest control technician but by the owner of the animal or a veterinarian.
A residual insecticide should then be applied to areas frequented by the animal. A carbonate containing bendiocarb or a residual synthetic pyrethroid would be suitable for this purpose. go to top of the page |

Dog FleaControl
Treatment consists of identifying the source of the infestation, ie the host animal(s), and if appropriate treating it with a suitable veterinary product. Such a treatment should not be carried out by a pest control technician but by the owner of the animal or a veterinarian.

Dried Bean BeetleControl
As the developmental stages occur within the seed, an infestation may remain undetected until adult emergence
Any infested commodities should be isolated and destroyed, or failing this fumigated.
The structure and fittings of the infested area, bases of equipment, pallets, cracks and crevices should be treated with a residual insecticide. This treatment may be supplemented with the use of an ultra-low volume insecticide application. go to top of the page |

Saw-toothed grain beetleControl
All stages succumb when exposed to temperatures of -18oC to -15oC for 24 hours and to 52oC for 1 hour.
